As many of you will be well aware of, a possible cyclone is due to approach Darwin in the coming days. Whilst no warnings have been officially issued yet, it’s likely Cyclone Fina will pass within 100km of Darwin this weekend. Heavy rainfall will occur, with widespread falls up to 300mm possible, and isolated falls to 500mm around the storms inner core are possible.
We ask that all tenants start to prepare now for a category 2 storm. Winds up to 150kmh are possible, and as mentioned heavy rainfall totals to 300mm are possible. A good comparison is Cyclone Marcus, impacting a similar part of the NT at a similar strength, back in 2018.
WHAT YOU SHOULD START TO DO:
Cyclones can be very unpredictable so we always recommend that you prepare for the worst case possible.
This includes the following:
- Make a plan
- Prepare a cyclone kit
- Secure your property
MAKE A PLAN
A plan should be made with all family members in mind. Where will you go, where emergency documents are kept, what to do should you lose power, where will your pets stay ect
The secure NT website has some great information on how to best make a plan and a link to their website is located here: https://securent.nt.gov.au/prepare-for-an-emergency/emergency-planning/emergency-plans
CYCLONE KIT
During a tropical cyclone, power and water can shut off making it difficult to safely store food and prepare meals. As a result, NT Emergency Services suggests preparing and storing an emergency kit with enough food, water, clothes and medications for each person for three days.
Your cyclone kit should contain the following items:
- First-aid supplies
- Batteries and power banks
- Drinking water
- Non-perishable food such as tinned and dry, sealed food (and don’t forget the can opener)

SECURE YOUR PROPERTY
Secure all outdoor loose items that could cause damage if blown around in high winds (such as garden furniture and toys). Move outdoor equipment, rubbish, chemicals, and poisons out of harm’s way. If possible, store, tie down, or move cars, caravan or trailers to a sheltered area.
Kept plenty of towels on hand as water will tend to come in under the window and door frames. Place towels under the windows and doors so that no one lips of the p[uddles.
Fill buckets and bath with clean water in case of interruptions to main water supply.
Keep your pets indoors, make sure they have a safe place, food and water and something to clean up mess.
Also remember to check up on your family, friends and neighbours. Help them if you can and don’t be afraid to ask for help.
